1957 PORSCHE CARRERA GTS
Having pulled out of Formula One at the end of the 1962 season, Porsche chose to concentrate all their energies on sports car racing. Fittingly, the new 904 made its debut late in 1963 in time for the 1964 racing season as a successor to the 718, which had been introduced back in 1957. Porsche designed the GTS variant to compete in the FIA-GT class at several international racing events.
In addition, a street-legal version was unveiled in 1964 to comply with the FIA’s group 3 homologation regulations, which obliged the factory to produce a set number of road-going models.
Porsche duly ordered components with which to build 200 Carreras. However, mid-way through production, they cut that number to 100. Eventually, 108 examples came off the assembly line, with chassis numbers ranging (logically enough) from 904-001 to 904-108. Whilst several more were ‘recycled’ in period or rebuilt and issued with old chassis numbers, Porsche still stands by its official total of 108.
The graphic treatment of the Carrera seen here is a beautiful and incredibly detailed watercolour presentation of an automotive classic.
