WINTER BANDSTAND

The original bandstand, set in Central Park, Dartford, was made by Messrs Walter Macfarlane and Co. of Glasgow. At the grand opening of the park in July 1905, the gates were ceremonially unlocked with a silver key and the civic dignitaries then took their seats on the bandstand from which speeches were delivered to the assembled crowd. Interestingly, the council purchased 200 folding chairs for Central Park at three shillings seven and a half pence each.

More than 100 years later in 2010, a new pavilion - The Henry Wellcome Bandstand - was built. Jointly made by Gallagher Group Ltd and Britannia Architectural Metalwork Ltd, it was erected very near to the site of the first bandstand and forms a flamboyant centrepiece for a vast array of open-air concerts. Whilst we know that the paving stones, steps and edges are of Kentish Ragstone composite to match the traditional materials of the bandstand’s plinth cladding, we are regrettably unable to tell you how much the local council paid for the new set of folding chairs.

A first edition of the print was licensed to the Dartford Council to publicise the bands and artists who perform for free for the public’s enjoyment. The winter edition - also called The Bandstand, which is illuminated by a full moon - was again licensed to Dartford Council for seasonal promotion purposes. It shows a very different perspective: without the criss-cross of cloud from aircraft flying overhead and minus the neatly placed deckchairs surrounding it. This print is also available on request without the 'DARTFORD' branding on the base.
