HMS Hebe was a 245 foot Halcyon class minesweeper, one of 21 in her class built for The Royal Navy in the 1930’s and was commissioned in 1936. She took part in the evacuation at Dunkirk, and at one point she was the headquarters ship having on board the “Senior Officer Afloat” who masterminded the evacuation. The ship took 365 officers and men aboard and sent a gig to collect Viscount Gort who was Commander in Chief of the ill-fated British Expeditionary Force.
Between then and 1942 she was deployed by Western Approaches on escort duties on the Atlantic and Russian convoys until May 1942 when she was sent to The Mediterranean to undertake minesweeping duties based out of Malta. She took part in several operations including the invasion of Pantelleria, a small island off the coast of Sicily which would enable, once taken allow allied forces to bomb Sicily itself.
In November 1943 she was off the Italian city of Bari when she hit a mine and capsized within and sunk within four minutes with the loss of 37 of her crew.
