HMS Wigtown Bay belonged to the Bay-class, serving as an anti-aircraft frigate in the British Royal Navy and taking its name from Wigtown Bay in Galloway.
Initially designated as a Loch-class anti-submarine frigate and ordered from the Harland and Wolff yard in Belfast on 6 March 1943 under the name Loch Garasdale, construction commenced on 24 October 1944.
Due to the urgent need for anti-aircraft escorts in the Far East during construction, the contract was revised, leading to its completion as a Bay-class frigate. The vessel was christened Wigtown Bay upon its launch on 26 April 1945, bearing the pennant number K616.
In April 1957, an offer was extended to sell the ship to Ceylon, though negotiations ultimately fell through.
Subsequently listed for disposal in 1958, the vessel was eventually sold for scrapping in October 1958. It was towed to the breaker’s yard at Faslane, arriving on 10 April 1959.
