The Rolling Mill

This edition captures the essence of a once bustling Scottish steelworks through a kaleidoscope of geometric shapes, overlapping angles, and shattered perspectives. The painting breaks down the conventional notions of space and time, reconstructing them in a multidimensional, fractured composition that reflects the fractured industry in Scotland.

The buildings illustrated represent facilities dedicated to steel production, casting, and finishing. Within these structures, the Basic Oxygen Steelmaking plant is a key feature. Here, high-pressure oxygen is injected into a vessel containing a mix of scrap metal and molten iron sourced from blast furnaces. The oxygen reacts with unwanted elements, such as carbon, resulting in liquid steel. Simultaneously, a lime-based flux binds with impurities to create slag, while carbon monoxide gas is captured for reuse elsewhere in the plant.

In the rolling mills, steel from the continuous casting building is processed into plates, coils, and bars. This involves re-heating, rolling, compressing, and controlled cooling. Once formed, the steel undergoes further treatments, such as cutting, coating, or pressing, to prepare it for its final application. The finished steel is then stored outdoors, ready for transportation and distribution.

At first glance, the canvas appears as a puzzle of planes, each rendered in muted, earthy tones reminiscent of the Scottish landscape. Harsh lines intersect and intersect again, creating a mesh of the building forms. In the foreground, nature has started rewilding the surrounds to reclaim the landscape and patch over the scars left behind. Smokestacks that once belch plumes of smoke into the sky are now silenced, a reminder of the symbiotic relationship between industry and nature.

As the eye moves across the canvas, the mind is challenged to piece together the disparate elements into a cohesive whole. The beauty of the piece lies in its ability to convey the essence of the steelworks while shattering traditional notions of representation.
