Don Wales Steam Car World Record

On August 25th 2009, Charles Burnett III – British-born proprietor/driver of steam supercar Inspiration and new land speed world record holder – invited prominent test driver Don Wales to ‘either break the record again or break the car’. Having just smashed the 100-year old record at 139.8mph, Charles was now very generously offering Don the opportunity and the financial backing to climb into the cockpit and go one better.

Don and his team subsequently spent ten long, hard weeks on Edwards Air Force Base in California enduring an excruciating heat wave in the Mojave Desert. Nicknamed the ‘fastest kettle in the world’ the UK-built steam supercar proved to be exceptionally tricky to manage, but the dedicated bunch of plucky Brits led by Jerry Bliss (Technical Director) and Matt Candy (Project Manager) were determined that neither the vehicle nor the environmental conditions would get the better of them.

This, quite simply, is a story of supreme human effort by a small but dedicated group of enthusiasts who helped make it possible for Don Wales to set another new world record with a speed of 148.308mph. Their stint at Edwards Air Force Base was one of extreme highs and lows, with brief successes peppered with bitter disappointments. Through it all though, the team never lost its sense of humour and their goal was eventually reached with only one day to spare – sweet reward for all the blood, sweat and tears.

Tragically however, on January 18th 2018, Charles Burnett III was killed along with four other people in a helicopter crash in New Mexico. It was understood that he was busy working on yet another land speed world record attempt. THE PRINTThis signed print is one of a limited edition of 100.
