Lighthouse Grey

Journeying home from one of many trips around Scotland’s stunning west coast, James came across the Eilean Musdile lighthouse set against a dramatic slate grey sky with the lighthouse illuminated by contrasting sunlight in the foreground.

Eilean Musdile is an islet to the south west of Lismore in the Inner Hebrides.A low-lying rock, ten acres in size, it lies in the entrance to Loch Linnhe and is separated from Lismore by a channel one-quarter mile across where ferries pass by on their way from Oban to Mull.

The lighthouse was built by Robert Stevenson in 1833 at a cost of £4260 and initially displayed a fixed white beam. In 1910 most of the Northern Lighthouse Board’s lamps were fitted with dioptric or Fresnel lenses but Lismore and Fidra, in the Firth of Forth, were left as the only remaining lighthouses in service to use purely catoptric lamps.
