Whiting Bay

The village of Whiting Bay is located eight miles south of Brodick and is the islands third largest settlement behind Lamlash and Brodick, it once had it’s own pier where steamers used to dock.

The hamlet is true to form for Arran with its own unique character, the stone jetty cutting through the centre of this edition rests our surfers classic 911 (a less than ideal parking spot but handy for unloading kit). Those familiar with the jetty will recall it being wide enough to park on and ideal for peering over to observe passing fish or the occasional crab, if surfings not your thing then there’s always the calamity of the Whiting Bay raft race, something akin to Red Bulls Soapbox Racing but without the branding or TV rights but never the lack of dedication.

Baxter ‘soldier of fortune’ the scottie looks out to sea, content to be on the sand surrounded by the orange and yellow shells the adorn the beach. A watchful submarine sits faintly on the distant clyde horizon just to the left of the black rocks. Our surfer is a local for sure, the NAGS tattoo on her left arm gives a nod to Whiting Bays once famous disco.

With possible exception of the 911 and the attire you would be hard pushed to place an exacting date to this art. The view hasn’t changed for decades and this familiar balmy setting holds a special place in the heart of those who visit or are blessed to call it home.

Something to consider when enjoying a libation at the village pub!

The Douglas Hotel on the Isle of Arran is exhibiting this edition and others in the Arran series and are available to buy ‘off the wall’ .
